pissing in a bottle

there has been quite a bit in the news lately about the phenomenon that is urinating in a bottle while driving. apparently there has been quite a jump in the number of people relieving themselves while driving and then disposing the full bottles roadside:

Reese attributes the jump along a stretch called ‘Three Mile Hill’ to truckers skipping rest stops to save money given the high gas prices. “A lot of times when the drivers hit that incline they slow down and it makes it easier,” said Reese.

now sgt. reese, i agree that the incline and reduced speed make the feat much easier, but the real culprit here is the beverage industry’s move towards wide mouth bottles. it used to be that with pull tab cans and glass bottle cokes, and urinating into a beverage container was not the only difficult feat (with openings of only .5 inches diameter); there was quite a challenge keeping all that liquid in the bottle once it was full.

but thanks to snapple and gatorade and others have made it quite easy to fill and cap empty vessels and given male motorists a viable alternative to pulling over to make a pit-stop. there are, of course, more refined ways to address the gotta-go-on-the-go issue, and it should come as no surprise that the japanese are at the forefront of this technology. this and a couple of other inelegant solutions exist, but they lack the convenience and simplicity of the snapple bottle solution (although their ability to dispose of solid waste is a boon as is their multi-gender capability).

NASA has been working on a toilet system for it’s Orion space craft, and in order to do so has called on employees to help donate the 30 liters of urine daily. and with the Oregon DOT crews finding a 10-fold increase in the number of “trucker bombs” on the roadside, perhaps sgt. reese should make a call to the Johnson Space Center: “Houston, we have a solution!”

piss bottles are here to stay, whether you like it or not (although the kiwi’s apparently have problems even using a bottle at all), so i leave you with the musical stylings of mike watt and “Piss Bottle Man.”
